HESTER by Paula Reed, (2010). This is the sequel to THE SCARLET LETTER. I don’t know how you feel about a modern sequel to an old classic but it seems well written. Here Hester Prynne is left a widow when her “demonic husband” dies. In order for her young child Pearl to collect her inheritance she must go to England with her mother Hester. Hester meets Oliver Cromwell there. Now to meet an historical figure like that really makes me wonder.. why did the writer add that major fact to the story? It seems Hester has a sixth sense about the future, which she uses to help Cromwell in some way. The book jacket blurb claims it to be “a tangled web of political intrigue, espionage and forbidden love.” So far I am enjoying the book.
