THE DRY GRASS OF AUGUST by Anna Jean Mayhew

THE DRY GRASS OF AUGUST by Anna Jean Mayhew, (c) 2011. This story takes place in August of 1954 in Charlotte, North Carolina.  13 year old Jubie Watt’s, her 3 siblings and Mary the colored maid leaves with her family on vacation to Florida and Jubie’s mom is driving. This is really a tragic tale about segregation. I imagine something awful happens to Mary which makes Jubie rethink her life and that of her parents.  So far it’s enjoyable to read.
